During its invasion of Ukraine, Russian army planted on average over a thousand mines every day. This is a conservative estimate based on the number of explosives neutralized by Ukrainian demining specialists since the start of the war. In reality, this number may be much higher.

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine has published statistics demonstrating the fact that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion by the Russian Federation, almost 310 thousand pieces of explosive devices have been neutralized by the service’s specialists.

Since February 24, 2022, more than 40 thousand pyrotechnicians were involved in this work. According to expert evaluations, approximately 174 thousand square kilometers, or nearly 30% of the total territory of Ukraine could contain explosives.

Oleksandr Khorunzhyi, the spokesman of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, said that of all de-occupied regions, the most difficult situation with demining is in Kharkiv region. Here, since September about 1600 hectares have been demined, and more than 50 thousand explosive objects have been found in this location alone.

Current technical capabilities of Ukraine rarely allow clearing mines from more than one square kilometer of its area per day. Even if this rate is increased a hundred times, this country would still need at least several years to remove all dangerous pieces of military equipment and arms from its land.
