Challenge: Transmission of low-voltage alternating current through defined areas of conventional textile – Technology Org

As a global company, the BMW Group is developing the future field of automotive driving. The interior of the future should provide user-centric solutions such as improving driver’s and passenger’s comfort.

The BMW Group invites proposals for technology that enable transferring electric current through single-layer textiles such as thin woven or knitted materials. The textile material itself shall not be modified or harmed/destroyed to solve the problem.

While driving, muscular tension and local contractions are commonly experienced especially on longer rides, turning out in body’s discomfort and fatigue.

To improve user experience, it is interesting to develop solutions that are based on applying direct electrical stimulation to user’s muscles, similarly to what is done in Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) Therapy. Unlike the case of EMS, though, the driver’s skin is covered by clothes while driving and the electrical transmission might be hindered through textiles.

Submissions to this Challenge must be received by Dec 16, 2022.
