A Colorado-based U.S. startup named Biofire claims to have produced the first gun that integrates two biometric user authentication measures at the same time: fingerprint and face recognition. And, the company also says its biometric smart gun is ready for the market.
Recently, Biofire commenced accepting pre-orders for this firearm, which employs facial recognition and fingerprint verification technology.
Biofire’s founder and CEO, Kai Kloepfer, highlighted that the concept of a smart gun—a firearm that functions solely for its owner—is straightforward and non-controversial. However, the real challenge lies in creating a smart gun that consistently and reliably operates for the authorized user while preventing anyone else from using it, while at the same time maintaining the top safety features.
Kloepfer, 26, explained that his motivation to explore how technology could enhance gun safety stemmed from a tragic event in 2012 when a gunman took the lives of 12 people and injured numerous others.
The founder briefly studied at MIT, but quite soon made the decision to leave and dedicate his attention to Biofire. Now, his company has grown to include 40 employees and has received $30 million in venture capital funding.

Kloepfer’s team has undertaken the design and production of numerous prototypes, merging traditional gunsmithing techniques with state-of-the-art electronics. They conduct all their research, development, and testing activities at their headquarters located outside Denver.
Biofire’s latest model, which is now available for pre-order, resembles a conventional 9mm semi-automatic handgun with a touch of futuristic aesthetics. Positioned on the gun grip is a compact fingerprint sensor, perfectly aligned with the user’s middle finger when gripping the weapon. Additionally, a 3D facial recognition sensor is located at the rear. Fire control is electronic.
When an authorized individual picks up the firearm, the sight and the back of the weapon illuminates with green lights, indicating successful recognition of the person and the subsequent unlocking of the firearm. Placing the gun back down deactivates the lights.
